Liverpool's Crouch ready to play lone England role

Peter Crouch insists he would be happy to be England's sole striker in Wednesday's key Euro 2008 qualifier against Croatia at Wembley.

There have even been suggestions that, despite calling up Tottenham's Darren Bent as an extra forward, McClaren may choose to deploy Crouch ahead of a midfield five.

If he does, Crouch will be pleased to lead the line.

"If that is the case then fine," Crouch told Sky Sports News. "I've done it before and I've done it for England. There are attacking players in the side who can join up with you and link the play."

David Beckham was the provider of the cross from which Crouch scored against Austria in Friday night's friendly but after an otherwise disappointing performance he may face a challenge for his place on the right of midfield.

Crouch, 26, said: "We've got a lot of quality in the side and creativity and I've been lucky enough to be on the end of a lot of set-pieces and crosses from David.

"But Shaun Wright-Phillips, if selected, is another creative player. Any one of the midfielders are capable of creating goals."
