Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez is targeting Wigan midfielder Lee Cattermole as a potential replacement for the imminent departure of Xabi Alonso.

It is expected that the Reds and Real Madrid will agree a fee for the Spaniard in the next 48 hours, meaning Benitez will be keen to fill the gaping hole.

Benitez is set to offer Wigan £12million for Cattermole which will tempt the Latics after the bought him for just £3.5million last year.
