Liverpool have tabled a bid for Sunderland captain Lee Cattermole.
The Journal says the Reds, who also have an interest in Jordan Henderson, opened the bidding for Cattermole on Thursday.
They have a long-standing interest in the former England Under-21 man, with North East scout Alan Harper having watched Sunderland several times over the final weeks of the season. And while it was presumed their primary target was Academy graduate Henderson, it is Cattermole who has emerged as Kenny Dalglish's main priority.
It is now up to Sunderland to decide whether to accept the offer - believed to be in the region of £10m - but the situation could be complicated by a release clause in Cattermole's contract that would allow him to talk to clubs if a bid of significant size was tabled.
