Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard is backing Lucas Leiva to handle the increased competition in midfield.
New signings Charlie Adam and Jordan Henderson will pile pressure on the Brazilian, who finally started to impress last season after a poor start at Anfield.
Gerrard feels Lucas' mental strength will help him cope with fighting for his place.
The England ace said: "He has a strong, positive mentality. I've seen the difficulties he's been through.
"He has rolled his sleeves up, worked hard and improved.
"Lucas never let his head go down, fighting to prove people wrong. He will take that into this season."
