Liverpool to sign Barcelona great Valdes after fitness tests

Liverpool are believed to be closing in on a deal for goalkeeper Victor Valdes.

Express Sport suggests that the 32-year old former Barcelona star will be put through a series of fitness tests over the next two weeks in order to prove his fitness before signing with the Reds.

Brendan Rodgers is believed to be desperate to sign Valdes on a free contract after watching last summer's signing Simon Mignolet put in some subpar performances in recent outings.

Valdes left Barcelona at the end of last season after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in March this year which kept him out of the summer's World Cup with Spain.

During his career at the Nou Camp, the 2010 World Cup and Euro2012 winner made over 520 appearances in all competitions on his way to six La Liga titles, three Champions League trophies and a plethora of other silverware including two Copa del Reys, two UEFA Super Cups and two FIFA Club World Cups.
