Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish wants six new signings this summer.
The Daily Star Sunday says Dalglish believes doing that would give him a squad to challenge Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester City and Tottenham in the battle for Champions League places.
Dalglish and director of football Damien Comolli have a host of targets, with a left-back and a left-sided midfielder the priorities.
Aston Villa and England's Stewart Downing, 26, is being eyed for the left-wing role and either Newcastle's Jose Enrique, 25, or Everton's Leighton Baines, 26, for the left-back position.
Also on the Kop shopping list are highly-rated Blackpool midfield man Charlie Adam, 25 - and central defenders Phil Jones, 19, of Bolton and Gary Cahill, 25, who plays for Blackburn.
And Comolli's contacts have ensured there are a number of France-based players being discussed at Anfield, including Paris Saint-Germain defender Mamadou Sakho, 21, and Rennes midfielder Yann M'Vila, 20, who has earned rave reviews since making his France debut last year.
