Liverpool's Suarez has knee surgery but confident of full fitness for Uruguay

Luis Suarez is supremely confident that he will be at peak fitness for Uruguay at the World Cup.

The Liverpool striker underwent knee surgery in Montevideo on Thursday morning and left hospital in a wheelchair in front of concerned fans.

Suarez had an arthroscopic partial resection of his meniscus but has indicated that he will be fine for the 2014 tournament which kicks off in Brazil in less than three weeks.

"Be calm, I am going to get there," he told Ovacion.

"Thanks for all your support. I am going to work really hard in the coming days to be at 100 per cent and help my team-mates."

Suarez sustained the injury in the final match of the Premier League season under a challenge from Newcastle United's Paul Dummett which has prompted death threats from Uruguayan supporters who believe the young defender is to blame.

Uruguay open their World Cup campaign against Costa Rica in Fortaleza on June 14 before taking on England in Sao Paulo on June 19 and then Italy in Natal on June 24.
