Liverpool's Rodgers deems Sturridge unfit to play for England

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has told England that Daniel Sturridge will not be fit to play in next month's internationals.

The 25-year old striker has missed the past five matches for the Reds after sustaining a thigh injury while on England duty last month and has now been ruled out of the Three Lions' Euro2016 qualifiers against Slovenia and San Marino in October by his club boss.

Sturridge will not be available for Wednesday night's Champions League clash with FC Basel in Switzerland but could make Saturday's Premier League home meeting with West Bromwich Albion before Rodgers pulls him out of national team action.

Sturridge was injured after being told to participate in full England training less than 48 hours after taking on Norway in a friendly when he had asked for lighter duties because of a thigh complaint.

Of the issue, an irate Rodgers said: "Daniel won't be fit. Whether he is available for the weekend or not, he won't be fit.

"We are hoping he can develop over the next 24 hours and train with the team on Thursday and be available for some involvement and be in the squad on Saturday. But if you are talking about players' availability [for England], then they need to be fit to play and Daniel will not be fit to play."
