Liverpool's Rodgers bemoans 'awful' Markovic red card decision

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers felt his side were harshly done by in Tuesday night's Champions League draw with FC Basel.

Young winger Lazar Markovic came off the bench at half-time before being sent off when he placed a hand on Swedish defender Behrang Safari who flung himself to the ground just after the hour-mark.

Referee Bjorn Kuipers brandished the red card much to the dismay of Markovic and his teammates and the decision was also met with derision from a disappointed Rodgers who saw his side dumped out of Europe's top club competition.

"I thought it was an awful decision," Rodgers told ITV. "I thought the referee was disappointing on the evening to say the least.

"Markovic came on and was bright, made a difference to the team, he was dynamic.

"He had just taken a touch away, he's obviously got his arm up, but if that's a sending-off you are going to have two or three sendings-off every single game. It was a really, really poor decision.

"I'm not even sure whether the referees have seen it, but I think he's seen the player hold his face and lie down, but there was no way that was a sending-off."
