Liverpool's Oxlade-Chamberlain reveals Klopp encouragement led to opening goal

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has revealed Jurgen Klopp inspired him to attempt his long-range goal in Liverpool's 4-3 win over Manchester City on Sunday.

The England midfielder got his side off to the best start possible when he confidently blasted past Ederson from outside the box after nine minutes.

After arriving from Arsenal in the summer, the 24-year-old's goal highlighted that he'd finally hit his stride with the Reds after a slow start to life at Anfield.

"I managed to win the ball back. I drove through and there was a little gap that opened up. The manager keeps telling me to shoot so I gave it a go – and luckily it went in," he told Sky Sports.

He added: "It's a nice statement for us to make. They have been brilliant all year, they are a fantastic side and they have showed that," said Oxlade-Chamberlain.

"We knew we had what it took, if we were at 100 per cent, to get three points. It's good that we did it. Ultimately, it doesn't matter who it is, we just wanted to win."
