Liverpool's Gerrard: Man City win was 'biggest statement' we've made

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard believes the club delivered their best result of the season by beating Manchester City 3-2 on Sunday.

The Reds skipped away to a two-goal lead courtesy of a sixth-minute Raheem Sterling strike and a Martin Skrtel header in the 26th minute.

City hit back through David Silva and then a Glen Johnson own-goal, produced by Silva, before Philippe Coutinho landed the killer blow 12 minutes from time to allow the Merseyside outfit to remain clear of both Chelsea and today's opponents at the summit of the Premier League table.

After the match, an emotional Gerrard suggested that perhaps this victory was Liverpool's biggest triumph of the campaign thus far as they chase an elusive Premier League title and their first league championship since 1990.

"We need to keep calm, there are still four big games to come. That meant so much, especially when they got back into the game," Gerrard told Sky Sports.

"I think we showed today we are going to go to the wire, we are going to go all the way. Nothing is won yet, but that was probably the biggest statement we have made so far.

"That's the longest 90 minutes I've probably ever played in. It felt like the clock was going backwards in some parts of that game.

"But that is such a big result for us. We've got four cup finals left. People said that was the biggest one, but I disagree - I think the biggest one now is Norwich (on Sunday).

"Nothing is ours yet. The important thing now is not to get carried away with that result.

"We need to stay calm, focused and prepare for Norwich, they are fighting for their lives.

"The scenes are great today and the fans are very happy, but we have a day off tomorrow and then we go for Norwich."
