Liverpool's Gerrard, Chelsea's Cole, Man City's Hart among England player of year candidates

England captain Steven Gerrard heads a list of five players nominated to win the 2012 England national team Player of the Year award.

The Liverpool skipper played 11 times for the Three Lions during the year, missing just two matches, and led the team to the quarter-finals of Euro2012 after being made captain prior to the championships.

Joining Gerrard on the shortlist is Chelsea full-back Ashley Cole, Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart, Manchester United young gun Danny Welbeck and Liverpool defender Glen Johnson.

The quintet were selected by a combination of a fans' vote and a panel of experts with the winner to be decided by a final vote.
