Liverpool's Head of Sports Medicine Dr Peter Brukner says not much can be done about the injury sustained by club captain Steven Gerrard. The star midfielder tore his right hamstring late in England's 2-1 loss to France on Wednesday night and is set to be sidelined for up to a month.
The treatment of Gerrard by England boss Fabio Capello has been criticized by Liverpool who claim they had an agreement for their skipper to play around an hour of the match but after the injury occurred in the 84th minute, they have seen red, so to speak.
But Dr Brukner took a more diplomatic stance when he was quizzed on the issue.
"If you put your hand up to play for your country, you've got to accept how long they want you to play for," he said.
"There were obviously circumstances which came together to result in Steven playing for a bit longer than we had hoped, which is disappointing, but there's nothing we can do about that now."
Reds manager Roy Hodgson is believed to be waiting for a personal apology from Capello but that won't exactly mend Gerrard's torn hamstring.
