Liverpool's Downing hoping Gerrard gets England armband

Liverpool winger Stewart Downing believes teammate Steven Gerrard would be a great job if he were to be appointed England captain.

The Three Lions job is up for grabs after the Football Association relieved Chelsea's John Terry of the role and Downing has suggested that Reds skipper Gerrard, who held aloft the Carling Cup trophy yesterday, would be able to lead his nation with aplomb.

"He's captained Liverpool for many years and done very well and if picked for England would do that job well," Downing said ahead of England's friendly with Holland at Wembley on Wednesday.

"He's a big player for Liverpool and England, has a great influence on England and drives teams on so if he is given the captaincy then great."
