Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has praised captain Steven Gerrard after the Reds defeated Marseille 1-0 in the Champions League.

But it was not only for his goal that won them the game, it was also for the way Gerrard reacted to being hit by objects thrown by Marseille fans.

"Gerrard was really good in that incident, maybe the UEFA delegate will notice what happened. Steven did well not to react," Benitez said.

"Gerrard is a very, very good attacking midfielder, a very important player for us and his goal proved this."
