Liverpool's signing Marko Grujic has turned down an opportunity to don the legendary number eight jersey.

The Serbian midfielder, who was loaned back to his former club Red Star Belgrade following his transfer to Anfield earlier this month, claims that he is not worthy enough to wear the same number worn by club legend Steven Gerrard.

"No one could bear the weight of Gerrard's No 8! Not even players from Real [Madrid]," Grujic said.

"I'll wear 35 or 88. Or something related to No 8."
