Liverpool need Carragher replacement – Evans

Former Liverpool boss Roy Evans believes Brendan Rodgers has to sign a new centre-back this summer.

The Reds have failed to replace Jamie Carragher since his retirement in May 2013 and Evans suggests that the Merseyside club desperately need a new defender to compete with the likes of Dejan Lovren, Mamadou Sakho, Martin Skrtel and Kolo Toure.

"Well, you would think so," Evans told talkSPORT's Weekend Sports Breakfast show.

"They struggled at set-pieces and struggled defensively throughout last season and they don't seem to have targeted anybody in a central defensive role. Maybe they're happy with what they've got but you'd like to see someone go in there.

"The biggest person they've missed is Jamie Carragher, since he packed up. Just the motivation he gave his team-mates and his organisational skills, they've found that really difficult to replace.

"When you have different foreign players in those positions it becomes difficult to get the messages out from there."
