Liverpool's Jonjo Shelvey admits he is thrilled for Roy Hodgson after he was appointed the new England manager.

The West Bromwich Albion boss was today unveiled as the Three Lions manager after signing a four-year deal with the Football Association and Reds midfielder Shelvey backed the move after playing under him for a short time at Anfield in early 2011.

"I owe a lot to Roy because he gave me my Liverpool debut," Shelvey told the club's official website.

"He is a good manager and although things didn't work out for him here it wasn't just him to blame.

"There were a lot of us to blame as well because we weren't producing the performances on the pitch.

"He's a top man and a top manager, and it's a great achievement for him."
