Liverpool manager Rodgers: Chelsea fans know 'irreplaceable' Gerrard is a superstar

Brendan Rodgers believe Chelsea fans are well aware just how good a player Steven Gerrard has been for Liverpool.

The Blues supporters mocked the Reds captain with 'Caution: Slip hazard' signs during Sunday's clash between the two clubs at Stamford Bridge in reference to an incident where Gerrard slipped at a crucial stage in last season's title race.

Nevertheless, there was a standing ovation for Gerrard when he came off in the 79th minute in his final match at the west London venue before he moves to Los Angeles in July.

Rodgers knows that the Anfield icon has copped a bit from Chelsea over the years but says that is due to the fact that he is a top quality player who the opposition often fear.

"He's taken a lot of stick here, but I think the Chelsea supporters knew deep down it's only because he's a superstar player. They showed great appreciation for him," said Rodgers.

"I thought he was excellent. The last couple of games he's got the winner and he's got the equaliser.

"He's a player that makes the big contributions when needed. I've said before he's irreplaceable but we need to find the solutions, one way or the other."

Gerrard scored with a header in the 44th minute to give his Reds a share of the points after John Terry had earlier nodded his side ahead.
