Jurgen Klopp has revealed the name of the man who had a strong influence on him earlier in his coaching career.

The Liverpool boss was coached by the late Wolfgang Frank at FSV Mainz during his playing days and says it was lessons learned from him that helped the 49-year-old make the move into management.

"Wolfgang Frank was his name and unfortunately he died too early," Klopp said on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football.

"He brought in the 4-4-2 [at Mainz] and we became a much better team in this moment," he said.

"We were a real average team, nobody was interested in the club but in this moment we learned that it's not important if single players were better than we were, we could still beat them.

"For us, it opened our eyes. When I became a manager a few years later, I used a lot of the stuff I learned from him.

"He was the perfect role model and a lot of his players from that team are now coaches or managers around the world and that was always his dream."

Klopp started his managerial career with Mainz in 2001 before making the move to Borussia Dortmund in 2008 where he stayed at the helm until the summer of 2015.

After a six-month break from coaching, he returned to the caper with Liverpool in October last year.
