Liverpool, Man Utd go head-to-head for Bolton defender Cahill

The race for Bolton Wanderers defender Gary Cahill is tipped to be a head-to-head battle between Manchester United and Liverpool.

The Telegraph says Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish knows he faces stiff competition from United for Cahill.

The Scot sees the Bolton defender as the ideal long-term replacement for Jamie Carragher, but knows he would be forced to pay a premium price - as much as £18 million - to see off United, persistent suitors for the 25 year-old, who has become one of the most coveted players in the Premier League.

Cahill was scouted by Bayern Munich last Saturday.
