Liverpool legend Tommy Smith has branded Luis Suarez as "stupid".

Smith was angry that Suarez's snub of Patrice Evra rebounded on Liverpool by firing Manchester United up with Wayne Rooney hitting a double in the 2-1 triumph at Old Trafford.

He said: "It was a stupid thing for Suarez to do. Regardless of what's gone on he should have shaken his hand.

"It would have calmed the whole situation down. Instead he created a big controversy. What he needs to realise is that he's at a football club which prides itself on certain values and principles.

"Suarez is a fantastic player but he deserved a rollicking for that and it was good to see the club criticise him.

"By blanking Evra you could see how fired up United were and we were second best on the day."
