Liverpool legend Steve Nicol believes his old club can still sign Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk.
The Reds publicly withdrew their interest in the Dutch defender and apologised to Saints after being accused of 'tapping up' Van Dijk earlier this month.
However, Van Dijk, who has also attracted interest from Chelsea, remains keen to move on in search of Champions League football.
Asked if the transfer to Liverpool could still happen, Nicol told ESPN FC: “If the price is right then yes.
“If the price is right, which I hope is not £60million, because I don't think he's worth £60million.
“Liverpool need a centre-back, I guess sometimes you have to do what you have to do.
“Whether the valuation is correct or not, Liverpool need a centre-back.
“He is a good player, the question is can he deliver at Liverpool? He did it at Southampton, can he do it at one of the big boys? I don't know."
