Liverpool legend Nicol: Klopp made huge mistake starting Karius

Liverpool legend Steve Nicol feels that manager Jurgen Klopp made a huge mistake by starting Loris Karius in the 1-1 Champions League draw with Spartak Moscow.

The German keeper, who is not preferred by Klopp in the league, was partly responsible for Spartak's goal in the game – a 25-yard free kick from Fernando.

He told ESPN FC: "Spartak had two shots and scored one, that the goalkeeper should have got, Karius.

"Why he was playing, I have no idea.

"Klopp has already said at the start of this season that he's going to play his goalkeepers, which means one game is going to be Mignolet and Karius will play as well.

"I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't play (Danny) Ward.

"Listen, they should have won this game very easily.

"They have got a point, they are going to qualify through this group.

"But if they want to be top they have to beat teams like Spartak."
