Liverpool legend Steve Nicol says Chris Smalling was to blame for Manchester United's defeat at Chelsea.

Nicol was not impressed with Smalling's performance but admits he wasn't surprised.

"There's one man who can stop this from happening, and it's Chris Smalling," he told ESPN. "All he has to do is be positive, attack the ball.

"Instead of that, he completely shirks all responsibility.

"He was looking over his shoulder, hoping somebody would bail him out.

"In the end, all he did was cause problems for his goalkeeper and full-back - 100% this is at Chris Smalling's door.

"And guess what, is it really a surprise?"
