Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson feels Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has called Wayne Rooney's bluff.

Lawro wrote in the Mirror: "The ball is in Wayne Rooney’s court right now.

"Does he knuckle down in training, step it up in matches and think to himself: ‘I’ll show the manager what a player I am’?

"Or does he give up the ghost and jump ship in the summer?

"I think he will stay and fight but I do worry Sir Alex may be thinking the unthinkable.

"When Fergie brought in Robin van Persie last summer it was a such a good signing on many levels.

"It was a case of ‘Over to you Wayne. What are you going to do?’ Well, you’d have to argue that Rooney hasn’t really risen to the task.

"He may have scored against Chelsea and he did OK overall. I just feel Sir Alex has spent a lot of time constructing his side and making it his business to know which players are hungry and which players are cruising."
