Liverpool legend Hansen stands by "you can't win anything with kids" Man Utd taunt

Liverpool legend Alan Hansen stands by his 'you can't win anything with kids" remark 18 years ago.

Hansen made the infamous jibe after Manchester United were beaten at Aston Villa on the opening day of the 1995/96 season. United went onto win the League title that campaign.

"That line pretty much made me, simply because I got it so dramatically wrong!" Hansen told the Telegraph. "But despite being so dramatically wrong, if United hadn't won the double that year, you could still say that line now.

"I could have said it 10 years later and it would be relevant because it is a fact, but what happened with United was a one-off. I just said it at the wrong time.

"Even after that year, when he brought those five or six sensational kids through, Sir Alex always went for experience.

"And don't forget that the spine of that team included Peter Schmeichel, Steve Bruce, Gary Pallister and Eric Cantona.

"That team was a fantastic example of how to build a formidable spine and fill in everything else around it.

"The kids were great, but so were the goalkeeper, two centre-backs and the centre forward."

Hansen has confirmed he will be retiring from his BBC TV role at the end of this season.
