Liverpool legend Gary Gillespie fears his old club is well away from competing at the table.
The Scot believes the club has a long way to go before they can regain their position with the top teams in England.
"If you ask anybody from outside the UK who are a big side they would say Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Man United. Liverpool would not be in there," he told talkSPORT.
"Historically they are a big club, but they are a million miles away from those sides at the moment.
"Just look at when they go into the transfer market. Liverpool are looking at £10-12million players rather than the top sides who can spend £25-30million.
"Liverpool just don't have those sort of resources at this moment in time."
