Liverpool legend Carragher: Would Man City fans take Pellegrini over Mancini now?

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher is unimpressed by the work of Manuel Pellegrini at Manchester City this season.

Carragher wrote in the Daily Mail: "Is he going to be the man to lift City when the stakes are at their highest? When you think of Jose Mourinho and Sir Alex Ferguson, you know they can force their teams over the line when it matters with their personality. When they stand on the touchline, you can almost feel their presence.

"Can you envisage Pellegrini doing that?

"He is passive when in his technical area and rarely does he react. That trait, in particular, was worrying against Bayern Munich, when he never altered his tactics from 4-4-2 to stop the European champions from over-running his side.

"If he wants to use 4-4-2, that is his prerogative but it does not fit in with all the Barcelona connections City now have. All their academy teams play 4-3-3, so if the first team is playing a different system, how can you talk about a total change in culture at the club?

"(Roberto) Mancini was not popular with his players but City were difficult to beat under him. He made them challenge their neighbours and eventually overtook them, which is why City fans loved him.

"Knowing he would have been sacked even if City won the FA Cup last season made the situation even worse.

"It makes you wonder: if they were given the option now, how many City fans would take Mancini back over Pellegrini?"
