Liverpool legend Carragher tells Gomez how to make England's World Cup squad

Liverpool hero Jamie Carragher is confident Joe Gomez will make England's World Cup squad if he continues to perform the way he has this season.

The 20-year-old was recently handed his first two caps against Germany and Brazil, with the latter seeing Gomez awarded the man-of-the-match awarded for helping keep Tire's side goalless.

Carragher, who made 508 league appearances for the Reds, was impressed by Gomez's display and has challenged him to cement his place in Gareth Southgate's squad for Russia.

"I thought he did really well. I think he's had a great season," the former centre-back told the club's website.

"He's come in at right-back and at first he was chopping and changing with Trent [Alexander-Arnold], but now it looks like he's got the shirt at this moment and long may that continue for him because it looks like Gareth Southgate, from an England point of view, is going to give young players a chance.

"A performance like that puts him in a great position, I think, going forward with the World Cup in the summer.

"He's given himself a great shout for the World Cup but he'll have no chance of that unless he performs for Liverpool in the way he has been doing.

"If he continues like that he'll have a decent chance and most importantly he'll have a great chance of impressing Jürgen Klopp."
