Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher says the hype around Joe Gomez is becoming ridiculous.

Carragher believes Gomez has much more to do before he can be compared with two of England's best ever defenders.

Carragher told the Telegraph: “Although he played at right-back a year ago, since assuming his favoured position Gomez has been likened to Bobby Moore and Rio Ferdinand.

“This is stupidly premature, over the top praise.

“Gomez could become a top player, but to get there he will need to overcome sterner tests than Selhurst Park and the King Power Stadium."

Earlier this month, Gomez admitted comparisons with Moore were not ideal.

He told the Guardian: “I'm obviously flattered by something like that but that's a lot to live up to.

“I wouldn't take that on my shoulders, I don't think."
