Liverpool legend Barnes: We need to handle Woodburn carefully

Liverpool legend John Barnes says the hype around Ben Woodburn needs to ease.

Woodburn became Liverpool's youngest ever goalscorer in the 2-0 EFL Cup win over Leeds United last night.

Barnes told talkSPORT: “It was a great night for him.

“But as Jurgen Klopp said after the game, we need to handle him carefully.

“He's not a member of the first-team, but he's got potential, as a lot of them have. We have to give them time.

“When I made my Watford debut, I was in the team for the while season. When Wayne Rooney came on the scene at Everton he would be playing week-in, week-out.

Michael Owen was similar. When Michael scored that goal for Liverpool [on his debut against Wimbledon in 1997] you knew he was going to be a regular in the team, and these boys who played against Leeds aren't.

“So to compare them with players who are young and play in their team regularly, it puts too much pressure on them."
