John Barnes believes England's talented youngsters have not delivered over the past 12 months.
Despite the great potential of such players as Dele Alli, Harry Kane, Eric Dier and John Stones, the Three Lions failed miserably at Euro2016 after being tipped to progress far in the tournament.
The current crop of England young guns have been lauded by many corners of the media but Liverpool great Barnes says the jury is still out having played with a great group who made the 1990 World Cup semi-final as well as witnessing the Golden Generation of more recent times.
"We don't have as good players as we had in the past," said Barnes.
"When we had (Steven) Gerrard, (Frank) Lampard, (Rio) Ferdinand in their prime, playing in the Champions League, we couldn't get past the (World Cup) quarter-finals.
"Now we've got Dele Alli, John Stones, Eric Dier and Harry Kane who have been around for one year and done nothing. So why should we be winning the Euros?
"We do have good potential, that we have to be careful with, i.e. not praise too much before they've done anything, and not be too hard on them when they fail."
