Liverpool legend Barnes: Right decision for England to ignore Man Utd's Ferdinand

Not all of English football feel Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has been delivered a wrongful snub by Three Lions coach Roy Hodgson.

Ferdinand is furious after being overlooked for Liverpool youngster Martin Kelly by Hodgson after Chelsea defender Gary Cahill was ruled out of England's Euros squad.

But Liverpool legend John Barnes said: "Everyone's international career comes to an end, it's not a question of being disrespectful in leaving someone out. I had 79 caps and I was left out because my time was over. You have to back the manager."

Former Tottenham boss David Pleat also told the Guardian. "Nobody has a divine right to play in the side," he said. "I think it's for footballing reasons and Roy has got four players now who can cover at centre?back. I think a right?footer and a left?footer in Terry and [Joleon] Lescott is a decent combination."
