Liverpool legend Aldridge: FA Cup has been devalued

Liverpool legend John Aldridge feels the FA Cup has been devalued in recent years.

Aldridge wrote in the Sunday World: "The race to qualify for the Champions League has become the big prize in English football and, as a result, we have seen many of the top teams in the Premier League resting their big players and treating the FA Cup with a bit of contempt in recent years.

"In many ways, it has become comparable to the Copa del Rey in Spain, which was always viewed as a competition that didn't mean anywhere near as much as the Spanish championship during my days playing at Real Sociedad.

"The Football Association haven't helped the competition's image by messing around with it so much in recent years. Playing the FA Cup final at 5.15pm? What a nonsense that is. The Cup final is played on Saturday afternoon at 3pm and that should never change.

"Also, we have had Premier League games on the same day as the Cup final in recent years. It's another case of devaluing the competition, as is the decision to play the semi-finals at Wembley. I know the FA need the money, but the venue should be saved for the big finale of the competition."
