Liverpool are launching a bid for Southampton captain Jose Fonte.

The Sunday Mirror says Liverpool want Southampton defender Jose Fonte to plug their leaky defence.

The Portugal international has rejected the offer of a new deal at St Mary's and Southampton will want £10million the Euro 2016 winner.

And Liverpool are keen to bring the 33-year-old to Anfield to reinforce the defensive options of manager Jurgen Klopp.

Klopp could use wantaway central defender if Mamadou Sakho as part of the deal.

He cost £18m when signed from Paris St Germain in 2013, but is out in the cold under Klopp and has been playing in the reserves.

He said he was “disgusted" at his treatment – and is desperate to leave.
