Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is having VfL Wolfsburg fullback Ricardo Rodriguez watched leading up to the summer market.
Rodgers is determined to find a long-term solution to his left-back problems and is having his scouts assess 21 year-old Switzerland international Rodriguez.
Rodriguez is expected to be part of Switzerland's World Cup squad and Rodgers would prefer to do business before the Brazil tournament kicks off.
Sunderland had a £6 million offer for the youngster turned down by Wolfsburg on deadline day last summer.
