Mainz coach Martin Schmidt has rapped Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius for snubbing the Rio Olympics.

Karius has chosen to stay with Liverpool and do preseason with his new club rather than take part in Germany's campaign.

"The Olympics are every four years, and then you might not even qualify," barked Schmidt.

"That is why my general opinion is that one should not block a young player. This opportunity usually comes only once in a lifetime."

Mainz keeper Jannick Huth has been called up as Karius' replacement.
