Liverpool managing director Iain Ayre flew to Spain on Thursday to hold talks with Barcelona regarding the transfer of Martin Montoya.
The highly-rated 22-year old full-back comes out of contract at the Nou Camp in the summer and has so far been unable to agree fresh terms with the Blaugrana.
With Reds left-back Jose Enrique expected to be sidelined until at least February, Brendan Rodgers is keen for reinforcements and is hoping to lure Montoya to Anfield in January rather than wait until the end of the season.
The Mirror suggests that Ayre is hoping to steal a march on Arsenal and Inter Milan who have also been credited with considerable interest in Montoya.
