Liverpool ignore lucrative tour offers for Austria boot camp

Liverpool are kicking off their preseason in earnest with a camp in Austria.

The Reds turned down offers to tour outside Europe because they were concerned their players would be tired after the World Cup and boss Roy Hodgson will instead use this 10-day Alpine camp to whip his squad into shape.

The Liverpool party which flew out today was missing their World Cup players and they will return in stages over the rest of the month.

The Reds will be based at a resort in the Alps near to the Austrian border and the players will combine daily training sessions with a series of warm-up matches.

Saudi Arabian champions Al-Hilal will provide Hodgson with his first opponents as Liverpool manager when the two sides meet in Austria on Saturday night.

Liverpool will then play Grasshoppers next Wednesday and Kaiserslautern on Saturday week before returning to prepare for the first leg of their Europa League qualifier on July 29.
