Liverpool icon Phil Thompson says they have an agreement with Newcastle United fullback Jose Enrique.
The Evening Chronicle says Enrique has not conducted any interviews with the media recently, and United yesterday had "nothing to report" on the player's future.
But he is thought to have been unsettled since Andy Carroll was sold in January.
But Thompson's comments will still sit uncomfortably with United fans, who have already seen Andy Carroll leave for the Kop, after he said: "From what I've heard, it's a done deal.
"It'll be interesting because he's done very well.
"He had a difficult first season coming into the Premier League a couple of years ago, but he really understands the game now.
"He's one of those full-backs who is good going forward.
"But he is also a good defender - and I think that is the main thing."
