Liverpool icon Carragher proud to be one-club man

Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher is proud to be a one-club man.

Carragher will be sorely missed during his three month absence with a shoulder injury as he is to the club what Paolo Maldini was to Milan, Guiseppe Bergomi to Inter, Klaus Augenthaler to Bayern Munich, Manuel Sanchis to Real Madrid and latterly Carles Puyol to Barcelona - that one-club, locally born defender who some might only truly appreciate once he has gone.

"When you mention those players, you automatically know the name of the club they play for," Carragher told liverpoolfc.tv.

"Since I've been at Liverpool, it's the only club I've wanted to play for. When I've finished my career, it would be nice to be placed in the same category as players like Puyol or Bergomi. They're with the biggest clubs in Europe and Liverpool's name is right up there alongside Milan, Munich and Barcelona.

"People always say they love local lads in the team but I'm not quite so sure sometimes...it seems like they'd prefer a multi-million pound foreign player. That's always been the way the game is - sometimes local players get taken for granted. You're expected to die for the club on the pitch but that isn't always expected of players coming in from elsewhere for some reason."
