Liverpool hero Thommo: Owen even better for Man Utd next term

Former Liverpool boss Phil Thompson has no doubts Michael Owen will make an even bigger impact at Manchester United next season. Owen scored nine goals last season, including a Champions League hat-trick, but started only five Premier League games.

And a hamstring injury meant he didn't feature after netting in the Carling Cup final win over Aston Villa at Wembley last February.

But Thommo says: "Michael has never had anything to prove to anyone even though he hasn't been a United regular or in the England squad.

"He has great self belief. He will still believe he should play for England and can still score goals at the highest level. Michael has had his injuries but he scores important goals - none more so than that last-minute winner against City.

"United do need more from him than that but Michael is a fine player. And he will be better for the rest he's had. I would think he will have a really good season.

"So, United should persevere with him. But I think United need more than just a Michael Owen.

"Berbatov has had a difficult time and they need someone more consistent."
