Liverpool hero Houghton urges Hodgson not to rise to Benitez bait

Liverpool legend Ray Houghton has slammed Inter Milan boss Rafa Benitez over his verbal exchange with Roy Hodgson.

It's reported that Benitez feels angry after appearing to be blamed for the Reds' misfortunes this season.

Houghton told talkSPORT: "It is getting personal. It's typical of him [Benitez].

"The problem for Benitez is that he's not in the country. Everything that's levelled against him, he hasn't really got the right to reply. So this is the first time he's come over to England, for the Spurs game, and he's going to have his tuppence worth.

"He wants to protect what he did at Liverpool. I'm not surprised, but I think it's bang out of order and managers should have more respect for each other.

"I think Roy's got a little bit more class than that. He's not that way inclined. I think he'll just get on with the job.

"He [Hodgson] doesn't need to go into the newspapers having a go at Benitez. I think he's got a bit more about him than that, he'll just take the higher ground and say,' you know what Rafa - did you win the league? No. This is the squad I'm left with, no Alonso, because you fell out with him, and Mascherano has left'.

"When you look at what he's been left with, and what Benitez had, you see how much he messed it up in the end."
