Liverpool have no choice but to call on Gerrard, Suarez says Rodgers

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers admits the club is currently in a position where it has to rely on their star players whenever they are in a bind. Rodgers was forced to bring captain Steven Gerrard and star striker Luis Suarez on late in last night's Capital One Cup clash with Swansea City but it was to no avail as the Swans ran out 3-1 winners.

Rodgers feels it was his only option to bring on the key pair but insists that he would have rather left them on the bench ahead of Sunday's vital Premier League clash with Newcastle United.

"That is the reality of where the club is at," said Rodgers.

"I would have loved to have kept them on the side to give them a breather but obviously when you need them you need to put them on.

"The problem then is your squad becomes even thinner: I can't keep playing Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez, who is my only striker.

"That will evolve over time, it is a team thing and we can't rely on two players. Over the next couple of transfer windows we'll get time to build the group."
