Liverpool great Dalglish recalls very first Celtic goal

Kenny Dalglish's new book 'My Life: A Personal Journey' touches on all the moments of his celebrated career.

The Glasgow-born former striker kicked off his senior career with Celtic back in 1969 before moving onto Liverpool in 1977 and was massively successful with both the Hoops and the Reds.

In the book, Dalglish recalled his very first goal for Celtic which came in a Scottish League Cup win over Rangers at Ibrox in 1971. Below is an excerpt from his autobiography.

"In 1971 I got a regular place in the first team at Celtic, having played three or four pre-season games and scored a few goals," wrote Dalglish.

"The League Cup used to be in sections. We'd play at the start of the season in August and September - we played about 10 games in two months - and Celtic and Rangers were drawn in the same section.

"Celtic Park was being renovated because they were putting the new stand up, so we had to play the two games at Ibrox.

"We were winning 1-0 in the first game when somebody went through and got pulled down for a penalty.

"Billy McNeill said to me: 'You take it.' I said: 'Why?' He said: 'You take it. You've taken one for the reserves.'

"I said: 'Oh, there's no difference then? Over 70,000 people and you're comparing it to reserve-team football.'

"It was at the Celtic end and all the photographers ran behind the goal in anticipation.

"Our fans were all cheering, although I think when they saw me stepping up they were saying 'Oh no!' - or words to that effect.

"It was like that moment when Alan Kennedy stepped up in the European Cup Final for Liverpool in Rome to take the final penalty and the rest of us thought 'Oh no!'

"I was nervous to say the least and so knelt down to tie my laces. I finally stood and scored and that was it. I had my first Celtic goal."
