Liverpool great Clemence: England romp still a massive test for Man City's Hart

Former England goalkeeper Ray Clemence believes the 5-0 win over San Marino on Thursday night would have been a mental test for Joe Hart.

The Manchester City number one was hardly called upon as the Three Lions cruised past the European minnows in Euro2016 qualifying at Wembley but Clemence suggests he still would have come out of the 90 minutes drained.

The ex-Liverpool and Tottenham star recalls times in his national team and club career when he was in the same position as Hart and revealed that it is not the easiest to sit back and not be regularly involved.

"Although Joe had nothing to do, it was still a big test for him," the 61-time England keeper said.

"You have 50,000 people there and you still have to concentrate for 90 minutes knowing that you might only have one save to make.

"I have been in that situation many times with England and also with Liverpool.

"I used to get really bad headaches after a game just through concentrating, shutting everything else out to make sure that I was switched on if I had anything to do.

"You try to shut everything else out and just play the game in front of you.

"You play behind the ball, wherever that ball is you adjust your position to be in the right position, so that if anything happens very quickly you are in the right position.

"You are not just stood watching it, you won't be moving around, so you are playing your own game behind the 10 outfield players."
