Liverpool grab Espanyol's Riera for knockdown fee

Liverpool managed to talk down Espanyol into a £5.5 million deal for winger Albert Riera. Espanyol had wanted £12m for their prized asset, but Liverpool have managed to persuade them to accept less than half that figure up front. Reds boss Rafa Benitez believes the deal could prove to be a real coup for Liverpool as Everton were prepared to pay the full asking price for the former Manchester City loanee. Riera, 26, had his medical on Merseyside over the weekend and has agreed terms on a four year deal with the option for a fifth.

Benitez has also managed to offload Steve Finnan. The full-back is moving in the opposite direction to Riera with a switch to Espanyol in a deal worth just over £1m.

The Barcelona club made a bid for Finnan yesterday and want him to replace wing-back Pablo Zabaleta, who has joined Manchester City.
