Liverpool goal against Man Utd in 2001 my favourite - Riise

John Arne Riise has rated his goal for Liverpool against arch enemies Manchester United almost 15 years ago as his personal favourite.

The Norwegian left-back struck a sizzling effort past Fabien Barthez in his very first Liverpool v Man Utd clash in November 2001 which ended 3-1 to the Reds at Anfield.

Riise fondly recalls the goal in an interview with the Liverpool Echo, labelling it as the strike that sticks in his memory the most.

"It was the cleanest strike I've ever made," said Riise.

"It was like when you hit the perfect golf shot - it was so smooth. I barely felt like I'd hit it."

He added: "Out of all the goals I've ever scored, that's my favourite because of the opponents, the timing of it and how I hit that ball.

"That one and the one against Everton did a lot for me. It really made my name stick with the Liverpool fans. That made it easy for me to connect with them.

"It was a great moment and I feel privileged to have scored that goal. I know the fans still sing about it now and that means a lot."
