Liverpool have failed with a bid for Chelsea midfielder Juan Mata.

The Daily Express says the Reds have made a surprise bid to take Mata on loan but Chelsea still consider the Spaniard a key member of their squad and turned the offer down.

Chelsea maintained the stance they have held all summer - that Mata is not for sale - and have given the enquiry short shrift.
